Mahanadi Coalfields to supply 35.48L tonnes of coal to SDSTPS
Sri Damodaram Sanjeevaiah Thermal Power Plant Stage-II’s Unit-3 contributes to the daily consumption with around 16 MU of energy

Vijayawada: Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), one of the leading coal producing company, has agreed to supply 35.48 lakh tonnes of coal to Sri Damodaram Sanjeevaiah Thermal Power Plant (SDSTPS) Stage-II’s Unit-3 (800 MW) located at Nelatur near Krishnapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.
This will be a great boon for meeting the rising demand and providing 24x7 qualitative power supply, said K Vijayanand, Special Chief Secretary, Energy on Sunday.
APGENCO is taking several initiatives to increase coal supply to its thermal power stations on a war-footing basis. SDSTPS Stage-II’s Unit-3 (800 MW) contributes to the daily consumption with around 16 MU of energy and came in handy to meet the rising demand of AP State Grid, its MD K V N Chakradhar Babu said.
He briefed Vijayanand in a virtual review meeting on coal supply to thermal units and its impact on power generation, and said that they are taking all steps to meet the growing demand.
The lighting up of another 1x800 MW Dr Narla Tatarao Thermal Power Station (Dr NTTPS) is scheduled in a month. APGENCO is also establishing 12 hydro electric units of 80 MW capacities at Polavaram. In tune with the persistent efforts of the APGENCO MCL has agreed to supply 35.48 lakh tonnes of coal per annum to SDSTPS as per the Fuel Supply Agreement (FSA) with AP Power Development Corporation Limited (APPDCL).
APGENCO and APPDCL have 5811 MW of thermal and 7989 MW of total installed capacity, for which they have FSA for supply of coal from MCL for a quantity of 17.165 MMTPA (million metric tonne per annum) and from Singareni Coal Collieries limited (SCCL) for a quantity of 6.88 MTTPA. Accordingly, coal is being supplied through all rail route (from MCL and SCCL) to Dr Narla Tata Rao Thermal Power Station (NTTPS) and Rayalaseema Thermal Power Plant (RTPP) and rail sea rail mode (from MCL) to SDSTPS and RTPP.
With the continuous monitoring and directions of Chief Minister Y S JaganMohan Reddy and Energy Minister Peddireddi Ramachandra Reddy and senior officials with the support of Ministry of Power, Coal India Limited (CIL) /MCL has allocated 3.548 MMTPA of coal to Unit-3, 1X800 MW SDSTPS unit and FSA was entered. The unit’s commercial operation date was declared on March 10. After completion of COD, MCL has issued permission for supply of coal as per FSA to Unit-3 with effect from May 1.
Considering the addition of new units, APPDCL has started optimum utilisation of coal from Adani Krishnapatnam Port to SDSTPS to run the units without interruption.
